Kata Cards

Overview:

One of the most frequent pieces of feedback I receive is "we wish you were teaching more than once a week".

While I'm not able to commit to teaching more than 1x weekly for now, I constantly strive to provide additional value to my students and improve their ability to train more frequently and independently in addition to their group/private classes with me.

Given this, after more than 8 months of work, I'm proud to introduce "kata cards" to give my students EVEN MORE options to enhance their martial arts training.

All About Kata Cards

What are kata cards?

  • “Hotel room” style cards, operating by NFC (same technology as tap to pay with Visa).

  • Kata cards tap on your phone & grant the student access to their specific kata curriculum in instructive video format.

  • When a student learns new content in class, their kata card is updated in real time with the new content facilitating practice this at home with a little more 1:1 guidance like I would in person for private or group classes.

How Do Kata Cards work?

  1. Download the app for iOS or Android for your device of choice

  2. Scan your card on your device’s NFC reader!

  3. Train It will look something like this for your particular kata card

How do I onboard?

  • Kata cards are optional for all my students for calendar 2024.

  • Onboarding is $50+HST setup fee/student, then $55+HST each time their membership renewal occurs.

  • Kata cards are available for karate and kobudo content separately. Only 1 card is needed if you wish to have both karate and kobudo kata card content.

  • Upon onboarding, I will direct my students to an mobile app download on their (or their parent's) device. Students under 18yo will need parental consent for me to issue a kata card to them directly.

  • Each time the card is tapped, the student’s specific kata content is displayed via the app. This can be mirrored to larger screens or practiced with the video as is on their device per your preference.

  • Your kata card is customized to you and your specific curriculum requirements. As always, you can cross reference belt level specific curriculum requirements here.

Safety/Privacy

  • Kata cards can be issued for children as well, but the card will be given to the parent for use at their discretion for their child.

  • Kata cards are private, meaning as always, I would expect these to be used responsibly for independent training, not "show and tell" at school or otherwise.

  • If you lose your card I can disable on my end and the card will be unusable. Replacement cards are $50+HST.

Additional Details for Parents

  • Kata cards represent another way for my teens to build a sense of independence & responsibility. Parents who choose to onboard their teen with a kata card give their son/daughter an opportunity to treat their kata card like they would a passport, keys, drivers license, etc. I will be holding my teens to this standard of personal responsibility as I always do to promote their personal development & transfer of these essential competencies into adulthood.
