Physical Literacy

  • We strive to have our kids be able to read and write, hitting milestones for progress along the way academically, even ossifying this structure in terms of the “grade” system in public schools, yet, for some reason when it comes to learning to move and understand our own bodies, how they move, how to exercise, etc. most kids, teens, and adults could be considered “illiterate”. Learning to run, jump, move, stretch, and exercise are core to our human experience - unlocking a lifetime of health and freedom and confidence, yet, most public schools do not adequately prepare young people with the physical literacy skills needed to thrive the rest of their lives in the same way they do academically.

  • This is where the role of a physiotherapist (or good PE teacher over the course of many years!) can promote positive experiences with exercise, movement, and health - promoting a lifetime of engagement with exercise and making your child physically literate in the process.

  • We lose the skills we don’t use in every facet of our lives, from math to language to moving our body! therefore, literacy is not just important to obtain, but to maintain through regular investment of time and effort.

Physical Training and Fitness is Safe for Kids

There has been much debate the past 10 years about the safety and efficacy of children and youth engaging in exercise and “training” (a structured, programmatic exercise plan in pursuit of a goal). While debate is always necessary and can be helpful, unfortunately much of this has pushed the narrative and fears about the idea of hcildren exercising and has not been helpful for kids or their families struggling in an ever more sedentary world to meet basic (let alone those aimed at improving fitness or physical performance) movement guidelines.

Take a look at the below resources on the safety and efficacy, and import of children engaging in an active exercise and training program to support their health and growth.
